DEATH BECAUSE OF POLIO VACCINATION-AFIS OLADOSU

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
“...he who kills a soul - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed the whole humanity…” (Quran 5:32)
BRETHREN the euphoria of the victory of the Super Eagles over their Burkinabe counterparts in the just concluded African Cup of Nations would soon die out. It must be rested in order for something more lasting to replace it. Such is the nature of human life. Neither happiness nor sadness last forever. No matter how profound the grief is, once it is nightfall, it begins to wither away.
No matter the width and depth of the happiness, once it is dawn after the event, it begins to disappear. Brethren, show me a man who still weeps over the departure, last summer, of the beloved; my sister, have you ever come across a woman who still wears the wedding garment of last December all around town today? Thus happiness and sadness, like the human garment, age with the passage of time. We are all products of the moment. Like the balloon, we are all, on the terrestrial earth, fated for liquidation.
Brethren, while the whole nation was caught in the fleeting pleasure of the round leather game in South Africa, some elements within this contraption known as Nigeria were busy spreading terror and grief. They went on rampage in Kano. They murdered nine innocent female medics who were involved in the noble task of vaccinating children against polio. As at the time of writing this sermon, the identity of the perpetrators of the dastardly act is still unknown. But the discerning minds would recollect that sometimes in the past, controversy emerged over the propriety or otherwise, at least from the point of view of Islam, of vaccination of Muslim children against poliomyelitis. It was thought then, and erroneously too, that vaccination was one other plot from the West to decimate the population of Muslims in Northern Nigeria. The only way to counter the plot, the anti-vaccination stream argued, was for Muslims to campaign against it and protect Muslim children against exposure to the effects of the vaccine.
Brethren, the murder of those women showed the change in the discourse. It awakened us to the fact that this country is still down there in the abyss. No matter their identities, those murderers have achieved their objective- they mirrored the hiatus in-between what Islam says in the texts and the contrarieties in the existential realities of Muslim life all around the world.
In other words, dear brethren, the murder of the Medics and other care-givers in the north exemplifies the evil of illiteracy or ignorance, the depth of insecurity of lives and property in this country and the ascension of a dangerous trend which appears targeted at the complete pauperization and despoliation of human and material resources in that part of the country.
Brethren, argument against vaccination in order to prevent the outbreak of polio is to say the least ribald and puerile. It is ribald because its effect would be the opening of the door for the outbreak of polio to such an extent that it would become a pandemic. It is asinine because it fails to consider the statement of our Prophet that “every disease has a cure; explore cure for your disease because the Almighty has not created a disease except that He accompanies it with its cure.”
But why should the West become blamable for every problem confronting us in the Muslim world? How could the West become solely culpable for incidences of poverty, illiteracy, and social and political anomie in our land? Brethren, it is my humble opinion that those who killed those medics last week have lost the opportunity to exist and have, therefore, concluded that they would, in return, deny others the chance to live. I say this because I know that he, who has something to live for, would prefer not to die for nothing.
Brethren, until those in power rise up to confront the weaponisation of the polity by pooling the plug on the uncanny franchise already given to access to weapons of violence, this country shall continue to witness such dastardly acts.
Brethren, until those in power confront the problems of poverty, youth unemployment, failed infrastructure and conscious construction of inter-tribal dialogue among disparate nationalities within this country, this country shall continue to play host to such macabre dance as had happened in Kano. Brethren, until Muslims in this polity rescue Islam from the hands of those elements within us, who say that their own understanding of Islamic principles is the only valid one, we shall continue to suffer negative stereotypes from the hands of the Other.
Brethren, how can you say that vaccination against polio is haram whereas in Saudi Arabia, it is a prerequisite that a child present his first year vaccination certificate before he gets registered in school? Is it not true that possession of valid evidence of vaccination against Yellow Fever virus is a condition that must be satisfied before travelers are allowed entry into some countries in Africa and Asia? Is the refusal to engage in constructive criticism of the self not responsible for the fractures and fissures in our polity today?
Prophet Muhammads’s perspective (s.a.w) on the above is instructive. He said as follows: “I’m concerned about five events which would ultimately lead to the occurrence of five negative events: whenever a nation, particularly its leadership, forsake modesty and embrace profligacy and treachery, the Almighty would, in return, create insecurity and fear in their hearts; whenever adulterous and licentious ways of life become rife and popular among the leaders and the led, the occurrence of incidences of death and tragedy would result; whenever a nation or community engage in injustice through reduction in the scale of equity and egalitarianism, what would result is the pervasive experience of economic insecurity; whenever a group decides by themselves to use an instrument of governance other than that given to them by their Creator, an instrument which emphasizes the here and now and loathes the hereafter, nothing would result other than heinous bloodbath; whenever people go against agreements freely entered into by themselves and among themselves they should expect nothing in return but the invasion of locusts in human flesh whose hunger would be satiated by the terror they spread and the destruction they wreck”.
I must again close with the following wisdom from Prophet Muhammad: “The parable of the person abiding by Almighty’s order and restrictions in comparison to those who violate them, or sit idle while they are being violated, is that of those who drew lots for their seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in the lower part, which is the most rough and worst part, and the others in the upper. When the former needed water, they had to go up to bring water and that troubled the others, so they said, “Let us make a hole in our share of the ship and get water, saving those who are above us from troubling them, so, if the people in the upper part let the others do what they suggested, all the people of the ship would be destroyed, but if they prevented them, both parties would be safe.”

VILLAGE CHIEF POISONED OVER CHAIRMANSHIP AMBITION

SUNDAY, January 13, 2013 is a day the Isiebu community in Isiala Mbano, Imo State, would not forget in a hurry. It was the day one of their prominent sons, Nze Hilary Onuoha, died shortly after telling his younger brother, Mr. Bonaventure Ohuoha, his suspicion of being poisoned where he went to have a drink.

The story, according to Nze Onuoha, started when one Ichie Romanus Akano was said to have met one Marcel Emeh, whom it was learnt, owned a convenience store in the community.

According to his story, Ichie Akano had met Emeh and told him that Nze Onuoha had continuously been an obstacle to his ambition of becoming a chairman in the community.

It was learnt that Emeh, during his confession, in the presence of the villagers, alleged that Ichie Romanus Akano confronted him in his shop and threatened to kill him, if he failed to put poison in the drinks of Nze Onuoha since he usually came to his store to have drinks.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that Akano was said also to have promised Emeh N.5 million, in addition to his readiness to sponsor one of his children overseas, if he accepted doing his bidding or alternatively, he should be prepared to lose his life.

Sources disclosed that the cat was let out of the bag on Tuesday, when Onuoha came back home sick. He was said to have invited his younger brother to his room and told him that he was having a serious stomach upset. When his brother asked him what he took, he was said to have confessed to having some drinks at Emeh’s shop, and that he suspected that he must have been poisoned.

Nigerian Tribune also learnt that Onuoha breathed his last a few minutes after narrating his story.

Bonaventure was then said to have alerted the villagers through the village town crier immediately after his brother’s demise. The villagers were summoned to the village square, where Bonaventure narrated what his elder brother had told him.

Emeh was said to have quickly denied any involvement in the alleged conspiracy. Upon his denial, the villagers were said to have agreed that money would be raised to carry out an autopsy on the corpse of Onuoha to ascertain whether or not the deceased had died of poisoning.

In the evening of the same day the meeting was held, Nigerian Tribune gathered that Emeh was said to have sneaked into Bonaventure’s place allegedly to confess to poisoning his brother, while saying that he could not die alone for a sin jointly committed by Ichie Akano and him.

Bonaventure had then summoned the villagers again, charging Emeh to inform them what he had narrated to him.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that after Emeh had repeated the story to the large crowd of villagers, they were immediately stripped naked and paraded round the village.

Nigerian Tribune also learnt that the duo would have been lynched save for the quick intervention of prominent citizens from the area who pleaded with the crowd to hand the suspects over to the police at the local government headquarters, Umuelemai, which the crowd agreed to do.

Meanwhile, the youth in the area, out of anger, burnt the houses of both Ichie Romanus Akano and Marcel Emeh, for allegedly masterminding the killing of Nze Onuoha, their illustrious son, who was said to be a kingmaker in the community.

It was gathered that the family members of the accused Ichie Akano and Emeh fled from the community to escape the wrath of the angry youth, while properties, worth millions of naira belonging to the suspects, were destroyed.

Nigerian Tribune also learnt that the two suspects, who hailed from Isiebu in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, are now cooling their heels at the Isiala Mbano Divisional Police Headquarters following their arrest over the alleged murder.

According to Marcel, Ichie however promised to give him N.5m and send one of his children to overseas, if he accepted doing his bidding or he (Marcle) would lose his life. Ichie Akano hails from Durukwari kindred, Isiebu Autonomous Community with the deceased while Marcle Emeh hails from Umudalum kindred, in Isiebu Autonomous Community. Culled from Tribune

KESHI'S SUPER EAGLES STAND ON THE THRESHOLD OF HISTORY

Nigeria go into their final against Burkina Faso as favorites following their famous win over Ivory Coast and comprehensive routing of Mali. Nigerian soccers fans have longed for the return of the golden era of 1993 to 2002 that lead to a 1994 nations cup title,1996 olympic title, world cup qualification in 1994,1998 and 2002. That was the era that produced the likes of Rashidi Yekini,Daniel Amokachie,Current coach Stephen Keshi,Jay-Jay Okocha,Nwankwo Kanu,Emmanuel Amuneke,George Finidi and Samson Siasia. The success of the players of this era has been the yard stick which subsequent under performing teams were held to. Now the current Super Eagles teams stand at the threshold of history as they aim to lift the Nations cup for the third time. Much of the current team success is attributed to the hunger of the players and the confidence of the coach who decided to give a bunch of local based players an opportunity to play for the national team. Keshi has moulded a team where team work is supreme, the sublime skill of John Obi Mikel is complimented by the tireless work rate of Sunday Mba and the dimunitive Ogenyi Onazi. In the current Super Eagles team, there is no room for just the possession of skill, its all about hard work. The midfield is mobile and they deployed this against the Ivorians such that before the star studded Ivorians could not find their feet. In the semi final game against Mali they Super Eagles employed this same speed, power and athleticism  to devastating effect that the Malians were simply blown away. The hard runs of Emmanuel Amenike who may emerge the highest goal scorer and MVP was just too much for the Malians to handle. Also the incisive runs by Victor Moses was simply breath taking while the cerebral passes of John Obi Mikel in the games was such a delight to behold. Keshi seems to have found a balance that is yielding results after being villified by the Nigerian media for shunning established stars like Obafemi Martins,Peter Odemwingie and John Utaka. The teams that Keshi has built fits his vision which all about team work and athletiscm. Keshi was a Nigerian legend as a player and he stands to enter the hallowed chamber where only winning coaches tread if his team can overcome the Burkinabes. The Nigerian opponents in the final have proved themselves to be a real threat. They offer a contrast style where they run endlessly at their opponents. Despite being a goal down to Ghana and with several questionable calls by the referee (Ghanian's twelfth player) they continued to throw a blietzkrieg against the Ghanians until they prevailed in the ensuing penalty kick. The Burkinabes are spoiling for a showdown to try and upset the Nigerians in the final. If they employ their pugilistic approach, they may aim to hack down the dynamism of the Nigerian team.

PETER ODEMWINGIE (ODEMWHINGING) VOLTE FACE WITH WEST BROM

Peter Odemwingie finally showed up at training today alone while the rest of his team mates were not there except for Youssouf Mulumbu and Claudio Yacob who were recovering from slight knocks that have kept them away from the first team. 'Odemwhinging' has to deal with the farce that he created for himself by driving to Oueens Park Rangers to try and force a transfer deal to go through last month.
Peter the consumate drama queen has to deal with the farce that he created by such an ill advised move.Granted that one can understand his going to London just in case a deal is reached so that he can get to the OPR ground quickly, but why did he not stay in a nearby hotel rather than going to the ground directly? To go to the ground and attempt to get inside was rather awkward for all concerned as he just succeeded in making a fool out of himself. Now he has to face fans who once adored him that he insulted on twitter and team mates who feel that he disrespected the team.

MALI MAY NOT BE UNDERDOGS AS SPECULATED

Mali captain Seydou Keita who happens the heart and soul of the current Malian team has come out to state that the Stephen Keshi tutored Super Eagles  will face an uphill battle  on Wednesday in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations semifinals. Looking at the Nigerian team, while they have the odds favoring them but their greatest undoing might be to go into the game believing they have a right to win just like the Ivorians did. The Malians know that the element of suprise which the Super Eagles had against the Ivorians is no longer there and they will make sure that they try to match the Nigerians in all aspect of the game. Also, while Keshi might claim that he knows the Malians very well, having coached them before, but the team Keshi coached has changed a lot since then. Also, there is a new aura with the current team that makes them believe that they can achieved a lot if they work as a team. The Nigerians really have to be wary and pay attention to the game like they did against the Ivorians if they are to win. According to Keita ,the former Barcelona midfielder said “People keep saying that Nigeria will beat us on Wednesday because their coach Stephen Keshi knows the in and out of Mali team having coached us in the past, but that is not true,” Keita said.“We’ve had three coaches after Keshi’s departure and that should tell you a lot of transformation has taken place. Keshi, with all the respect I have for him, will meet a different team on Wednesday and not what he left behind. So tell him we have changed. The Nigerians really have to approach the game with all seriousness so that they are not caught by suprise. The Malian Eagles finished third in the last AFCON competition while being coached by former French International Alain Girresse.

EAGLES ROOKIE DEFENDER GODFREY OBOABONA AND THE CASE FOR GIVING HOMEBASED PLAYERS A CHANCE

The Super Eagles finally proved their skeptics wrong when they defeated the pre-tournament favorites (Ivory Coast) out of the current African cup of Nations. Just like Naijaman stated before,Coach Stephen Keshi decided to give home based players a chance unlike all his predecessors. In the heart of Nigerian defence is Sunshine stars skipper Godfrey Oboabona who is rookie in the Super Eagles. The tall defender's work rate at the Nigerian defence has been a heart warming experience. Granted his ability to read the game and ball passing ability still need to be improved upon, the bottomline is that by giving him a chance,Coach Keshi has shown that he means well for the future development of the game in Nigeria unlike the foreign coaches who never bothered to watch our local leagues to discover new talents. Rather they will reside in Europe and only show up to Nigerian with foreign based players with questionable loyalty to the national team cause whenever the national team is about to have a game. In all Godfrey is a raw diamond and there are many like him in the local league waiting to be given an opportunity to showcase their talent.Giving that central defenders get better as they play more games,i hope to see him as a constant feature at the heart of Super Eagles defence for many years to come.

JAJI BOMB MASTERMINDS ARRESTED OR IS ANOTHER CASE OF PARADING THE USUAL SUSPECTS?

After the arrangement of the so called Jaji bomb masterminds, very little has been heared of the case prompting naijaman to ask whether we have the real culprits who commited the the act or is it another case of the police parading the usual suspects with nothing coming out of it in the long run. The convoluted story of the two so called suspects is narrated below and i would leave the readers to reach their own conclusion whether the police actually have the real culprits or not

**a yam seller from Taraba and 18 year old boy from Osun.
**I was introduced to the late Sect leader by his Alfa, a muslim cleric who taught him and other children Islamic studies in Kaduna.
** Late Bashir Madalla trained boy in the use of fire arms.
**Alfa requested the boy to return to Kaduna, that he had something for him to do.
**Mallam Mohammed Ibrahim Idris was responsible for conducting surveillance on selected targets using the cover of a yam hawker.

18 year old Ibrahim Mohammed Alilullah of Ilobu village in Ilobu LGA of Osun state and 50 year old yam hawker from Jalingo in Taraba state, Mohammed Ibrahim Idris, were on Friday paraded by the Department of State Security Service, SSS, as being part of the masterminds of the bomb attack at St. Andrews Protestants Military Church in Jaji, Kaduna state, Northern Nigeria, on the 27th of November, 2011.
The suspects who were arrested in Rafin Gusa, a suburb in Kaduna metropolis confessed to being members of the Boko Haram sect. The teenager stated that he was indoctrinated into the dreaded sect by Late Bashir Madalla who trained him in the use of fire arms as well as production and priming of improvised explosive devices, IEDs.
The youngster told journalists at the SSS Headquarters in Abuja that he was introduced to the late sect leader by his Alfa, a muslim cleric who taught him and other children Islamic studies in Kaduna state.
According to him, the Alfa, whose name he gave as Raji gave his phone number to the late Boko Haram sect leader while he was visiting his parents at his home town of Ilobu, Osun state. The leader, he further stated, requested that he return to Kaduna that he had something for him to do. He complied and was picked up by the cleric and the late sect leader to the late sect leader’s house in the state.
Alilullah also said that he only functioned as a courier to the sect before the Jaji bomb attack. He said he used to pick up fertilizers and other equipment needed by the sect leader in bomb manufacturing. He also takes monies to some of the sect’s suppliers for goods delivered to the group.
In the course of responding to questions from the newsmen, Alilullah admitted being part of the group that attacked St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Badarawa, also in Kaduna state and St. Andrews Church in AFCSC, Jaji, Kaduna state.

On the Jaji attack, Alilullah, a junior secondary school drop out who spoke in fluent Yoruba language said that the late Bashir Madalla sent Late Mallam Lawal, one of the bombers who rammed one of the cars used in the operation into the church, to Damaturu, Yobe state to retrieve some military uniforms and weapons from a Boko Haram sect cell in Yobe.

He stated that Late Mallam Lawal personally wore the military uniform with the rank of Captain which afforded free access into the military formation in Jaji. Lawal it was who assumed leadership of the sect’s unit following the death of Bashir Madalla.
On his part, the 50 year old father of four daughters, Idris, told newsmen that he was recruited by Mallam Lawal who used to be a yam hawker like himself, in Jalingo sometime in August, 2012. Lawal later relocated him to Kaduna state and secured a two bedroom apartment for them at Rafin Guza which served as the sect’s safe house and operational base.

He said that one of the vehicles used in the Jaji attack, a Toyota Matrix, was primed by the youngster, Alilullah and the late Mallam Lawal in the apartment. He also said he was responsible for conducting surveillance on selected targets using the cover of a yam hawker.
The Deputy Director of the SSS, Marilyn Ogar, while appreciating the inestimable cooperation of Nigerians in the war against the perpetrators of terror, reassured the public of the collective resolve of security agencies to bring to an end the activities of unpatriotic elements and restore peace, security and harmony to the nation.
She also stated that some of the suspects apprehended alongside the duo are still being investigated, said paraded suspects would be handed over to the military whose facilities were attacked, for further investigations.
